To Raise or Not to Raise in Texas Hold’em
Texas hold’em is a game of chance but still relies heavily on your skills and sheer guts. It takes gut to raise, call and even fold but most especially it takes a good amount of courage to bluff your way through the game. But what should you do when you get a pretty nice hand like an ace and a king for example? You would naturally raise, right? Some other players may also call while some may just fold and other players having equal courage as you do will re-raise and then you decide to call his bet, hey, you got nice pocket cards, don’t you?
But what happens when the flop is revealed to be a bit of a disappointment with a 10, an 8 and a 6? Now, your guts will come into play. Should you risk all that money when you know you are now holding useless cards by bluffing your way through? Most players in this position would eventually call so they’re still in the game thereby still having that chance of getting the pot but they would not want to raise because they feel it foolish to do so.
By going through with this move, your adversary will naturally conclude that you are not holding a high pair based on the fact that after seeing the flop, you don’t want to raise any longer. No matter that your opponent’s card is much lower that yours, he will take the gut route and raise the bet because you called and will correctly think that you may have missed the flop entirely. Now you are somewhat on a cross road, should you call and get on with the game until the last moment? or just you fold?
Having raised too early in the game, there is no need for you to cry over spilled milk. Having courage and being foolish are entirely two different things in Texas hold’em poker so do not worry about the amount you have already “contributed” to the pot but instead to act cool and make wise decision by folding. When the flop is revealed and you see that it will not serve you to call, then it’s time to let go of that particular game and fold because then you will live to play again another day.
Trying to maintain a hold on the pot by placing more chips in it is downright risky and silly even when you know you are holding nothing and your opponent may not be bluffing but knows that you may be if you call but do not raise. So in a game of Texas hold’em poker, if you have prematurely raise yet got nothing when the flop comes out be courageous enough to bow out and fold.
